Adobe Air 2.0 on Ubuntu 10.04 amd64

If you install Adobe Air 2 on an amd64 ubuntu 10.04 (or any other debian based amd64) , you’ll get some problems.

Some nice guys already wrote something about this problem, like Jeremy Wilkins .

See his post there: http://jerwilkins.posterous.com/installing-latest-adobe-air-on-ubuntu-lucid-1

Now, what they will teach you is to foget about the dpkg / apt way of installing it and it’s a pitty. Adobe made a good work of it, providing dpkg way of deinstalling applications and so.

Here is how to deal with this architecture issue.

Download the .deb package from Adobe:

[sniplet code 1]

Extract control.tar.gz from the package, uncompress, extract « control » file and remove it from the tar archive:

[sniplet code 2]

Remplace the architecture information in the control file (i386 => all)

[sniplet code 3]

Put back control file in tar archive, compress it, and put it back into the .deb package

[sniplet code 4]

That’s it. Package’s now compatible with any architecture and won’t cause any more trouble 🙂

    Hmm, one install of BBC iPlayer later, ignore my comment earlier about –force-install (as Jer Wilkins’s page mentions 🙂

    I found I had to futz with permissions in /opt after the iplayer install:

    $ sudo find « /opt/BBC iPlayer Desktop » -exec chmod a+rX {} \;
